Good, thought-provoking question, deermousey,

I know first-hand that receiving pain releases endorphins into the bloodstream. Endorphins are little naturally produced chemicals from the pituitary gland that (according to the Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th edition, 2001) reduce pain by activating opiate receptors (and you know how good opiates make ya feel! Okay, I don't know that first-hand, but I've heard....) They're also thought to be connected to physiological processes, including euphoric feeling, appetite regulation, and (guess what???) the release of sex hormones!

So, it's easy to see how euphoric feelings would be associated with feelings of ecstacy...which could be likened, for some, to have a religious significance, if you're so inclined.

Which also might explain why we yell out, "Oh God, Oh God!" :)

haloed ProfesSir? How do you fit it over those horns? Good to see you back. I hope the flamingos are with you.Jade, I agree that pain overrides pain. One of the reasons I stepped up my level of play is that it reduces pain from physical condition. You can only take pain meds so long before needing increase or a diffent med. I also believe that you can often achieve a mental state during play that is similar to those reached by meditation, chant or possibly even prayer. It can also increase the closness felt with a partner, like a oneness. That to me, goes beyond just the physical and is a spiritual connection.
